I hope all of you enjoyed my 2 part Big Data extravaganza part 1, part 2. Let’s get back to the everyday nightmare of stopping junk mail. Only 14 pieces this week.

This letter is concerning a complaint that the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has received regarding mail pieces being sent from your organization to the above-named consumer. In our ongoing effort to build trust and be responsive to the consumers of the direct marketing industry, we are forwarding this complaint to you for your response.

Ms. [name] [relationship], Jennifer Bell, has tried repeatedly to remove her elderly [relationship] name and address from your organization’s mailing lists but has not been successful in having her requests honored. Please see enclosed correspondence. Ms. Bell has asked us to contact your organization to request that you remove her [relationship] name and address from your in-house mailing. Prospect and share lists.

The Direct Marketing Association encourages all marketers to adhere to its self-regulatory Guidelines for Ethical Business Practice and its Commitment to Consumer Choice (CCC) program http://www.dmaresponsibility.org/ and Compliance Center http://thedma.org/compliance/. This includes promptly honoring individual opt-out requests, whether the individual is a customer or prospective customer. Our guidelines require that you keep a list of consumers who have asked not to hear from you and remove them from lists you mail to, share or rent.

We ask your cooperation in complying with the consumer’s request in a timely manner. We would appreciate it if you respond directly to Ms. Bell and provide us with a copy of your response.

I’m not gonna lie the mail can get boring. They send the same mailpiece over and over. They do that because once they find a mailpiece that brings in money they will send it out forever until it stops being effective. It is rare that junk mail has a topical, ripped-from-the-headlines subject.

Freedom Watch

This week Larry Klayman’s Freedom Watch sent a mailpiece that talks about ISIS. Of course it is trying to scare the money out of you, with the envelope screaming:

I hate slipping back like this, but the amount of mail that rolls in can have wild fluctuations in either direction week to week. PaperKarma has been having problems ever since the update to iOS8. I hope that they work everything out soon. I have a huge backlog of requests right now. And I have ratcheted up the revenge meter. I have sent out my first DMA Ethics Case Complaint form. It is for State Department Watch. I have emailed State Department Watch, I got no response. When I called them no one picked up the phone. Oh, now it is on State Department Watch. Look for that at the bottom with the pre-paid envelopes and the form 1500’s.

This is a momentous week. I have dropped 100 pieces of junk mail per week, from when I started. I can see the light at the end of the junk mail tunnel. I am in a holding pattern until mid-October when I will be dropped from HSP Direct and Nova List. So, no emails to anyone new until then. I am entering every mailpiece into PaperKarma, where I have over 200 requests.

I have stalled. I am stuck at 40-50 pieces a week. I don’t expect to drop again until the end of the month when the junk mail from Base Connect stops. I am taking a photo of every mailpiece in PaperKarma. I have entered over 140 different companies since I stated using PaperKarma in late July. A human from the DMA got back to me. They want people to mail in a formal complaint. I am going to try and get an e-mail address out of them.

I am back up to “normal” levels of junk mail. After a nice 2 week break with only one day of junk mail all my friends are back again. Missing are the SuperPACs that I directly contacted, and got back to me. I shutter at the thought of how much I would have gotten this week if The National Center for Public Policy Research, Federation Of Responsible Citizens, and Policy Issues Institute were still in the mix.

4 from G.I. America. G.I. America’s website is not working. I checked the Internet Archive and they hadn’t posted anything since 2010. To Keep and Bear Arms never had a website as far as I can tell. We have a Zombie PAC people. The only way to stop them is a USPS form 1500 to the head.

Update: It didn’t work because they aren’t selling anything in the mail piece. It is OK I have figured out that these 2 groups are run by Tea Party.org. Opt out here: contact@TeaParty.org

5 from Citizens United, Mr. Huckabee is in this pile also. Check out the 10 return stamps that one letter came with. They put boxes on the envelope and everything.
I have emailed them at info@citizensunited.org. No response. I found the company who makes their mail, HSP Direct and emailed them at info@hspdirect.com.  No response. I found HSP’s mailing list manager NOVA list. I contacted them here. No Response yet. If they don’t get back to me this week, I am going to file a complaint with the DMA at ethics@the-dma.org.

But the winner this week goes to the laziest junk mail I have ever seen:
Ghetto junk mail
From Disabled Police Officers of America and The Citizen Guardian It is a letter wrapped around an envelope. These 2 groups need your money just so they can pay for a better mailer. This is so pathetic. I would love to see the stats on how much this mailer brings in for these 2. My guess?

It was a big week for postcards, 8 in all. This is frustrating, I need a return address to give to fill out a form 1500 but all they give me is a phone number. Jerk scammers.

The Society and The League
The Society and The League. I have gotten one of these before, but to get both on the same day is very special. I don’t want to drag you down the rabbit hole to far with this, but it a cult. It is as one ex-member put it “a combination of Scientology and Ayn Rand”. Neo-Tech was created in 1984 by Frank R. Wallace and is now run by his son. They promise you the secret to great wealth. But you end up buying and selling really expensive books, that cost well over $100. Like I said this is the second one, time for a form 1500.

I made $1.25 in cash, $1.36 in stamps, 2 baggies of dirt and 1 talisman.

I am going to ratchet up my technique this week. I started this project in late March/early April, and I see no difference in the amount, or senders of junk mail. I am going to contact the DMA complaint email ethics@the-dma.org and ask for help.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This Week in Junk Mail 30 Pieces

I didn’t think that I was going to write an entry this week. I had no junk mail from May 9th to May 17th. It was the 8 best days I have had in 2 months. No giant stacks of mail in my arms, as I trugged back to the house from the mail box. No paper cuts, or getting stabbed by my letter opener. It was wonderful.

Then on Saturday the mail man dropped 30 pieces of mail on me. I consider this a victory. I was expecting the mail to get better the week of May 19th. The fact that it got better a week early is great.

The best pairing of the week was definitely Rand Paul and Al Franken.

As if you needed more prof that this lady’s mail is very messed up. No one should be getting mail from both these people at the same time. And yet here we are.

Only Planned Parenthood had a pre-paid envelope. But I had 3 hits on duplicate scams from the US. I only send out from 1500’s if they send me 2 or more. I then keep the duplicate return envelope as my record.

124 pieces of junk mail
This week the junk mail went back down to normal levels of craziness, only 124 pieces. I’m starting to be able to tell that all the emails I have sent out are having an effect. I only got 4 letters from The National Center for Public Policy Research. When you consider that I was getting 8 in one week, before I contacted them that is a drop of 50%. I will take what I can get.

Citizens Against Government Waste. Wiki Page, Source Watch page,  Charity Navigator page 2 stars (they are a 501(c)3). Oh the sweet, sweet irony of someone who is against waste, sending me 2 junk mail letters in one day, is so delicious.

Black Republican Fund, Edward Cousar
The Black Republican Fund BRPAC run by Edward Cousar. New York Times article about PACs that raise a lot of money but don’t spend it on candidates, that mentions the Black Republican PAC. This is not the same group as Black Republican Freedom Fund. The National Black Republican Association has a page devoted to telling everyone that their PAC is not that PAC. LOL You guys are the same, taking money from old ladies.
