Drowning in Junk Mail – Nora Lam Chinese Ministries International

Nora Lam Chinese Ministries International
Aw, look happy white people, and a roll of film. There are photos enclosed, let’s take a look at more photos of the happy white people.
Nora Lam Chinese Ministries International
WTH!? Where did the happy white people go?
There is a lot going on in this mailer, blue writing, yellow highlighter, a check for $5 and graphic photos.
This is for Nora Lam Chinese Ministries International Wiki page, no website, Charity Navigator page 1 star 30% of budget spent on fundraising. It is under the umbrella of World Children’s Fund (Charity Navigator page, unrated it is a private foundation) founded by her son Joseph Lam. Opt-out here. Their fundraiser is InfoCision call them at 330-668-1400 or email them infocis@infocision.com. If that doesn’t work, fill out a fill out a complaint to the DMA.

The letter is very interesting. Here are some highlights:
“Look at the photos I have enclosed. They are proof-postive of the bloody terrorism against Chinese Christians!!!

“THIS PROMISE IS ALSO FOR YOU, IF YOU WILL GIVE A SPECIAL GIFT FOR THE ONE THOUSAND TIMES MIRACLE MATCH, I AM GOING TO PRAY THAT GOD WILL MULTIPLY YOUR GIFT BACK TO YOU 1,000 TIMES!!! COULD YOU USE A ONE THOUSAND TIMES MIRACLE IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE? RUSH YOUR SEED GIFT TO ME TODAY!”

Those poor Chinese Christians being punished for practicing their faith in China. Oh look a message from Nora on the back of the photo:

“The cruel brutality of the communists is finally exposed (photo for illustration purposes only)”

WHAT! You put those nasty photos in my mail and they are just random people being tortured in China. The one of the lady is from a protest by the Falun Gong to act out torture. Another is a demonstration of “Dead person’s bed” from 2004. The one of a guy behind bars is also from a Falun Gong protest from 2004. Just to be clear, Falun Gong is not a Christian based religion. It is derived from Buddhist and Taoist traditions. These photos have nothing to do with Christians caught reading bibles in China.

This is as bad as the horse rescue people sending me photos of bloody horses:
Speak up for Horses
Even the anti-abortion people haven’t sent me any photos of dead babies (yet).

Nora Lam check

I want to focus on the check that was included with this mailer. This one is for $5. That is a lot for this type of check. They are usually for $2.50 or less. Do not deposit these checks. They give these “charities” access to your account. They will then take money out of your account every month. I have read every part of the letters they send, and no where does it say that you are agreeing to a monthly donation if you deposit the check. The woman who’s mail this is had 3 groups taking money out of her account every month.

Don't deposit these checks!

    • The meanest fate I can think of is: I hope the people that run these companies, parents fall victim to these scams. They go visit mom or dad and the house is filled with the very mail they make.

  2. Christians are being tortured all the time in China and all Anti Christian governments you ding bat!! And abortion is evil, Christians are the most persecuted minority on the planet: don’t believe me, a secular university in Germany says this

    • OMG my first mean comment! Thank you Steve for your visceral and passionate reaction. That is exactly how this charity wants you to react, then they will take your money. Nora Lam Ministries prays on your good Christian beliefs and your wanting others to practice their religion freely, then they pocket the money and don’t help anyone. Since I wrote this Charity Navigator has updated their page. They are now $900,000 in debt. That is not how a good charity operates.

  3. The pictures generally represent events that actually occur and have occurred in China. Can you show that this is not true? Bibles do go to China, mailing list costs are high because they generally give back as much or more than they receive such as sending full books…Joseph Lam “China the Last Superpower”. An informative ministry as much as anything…the mailings ARE part of the ministry. Advice on dealing with Chinese leaders in a Christian way, because their souls are at stake also…no be-headings, please. Ding bat offends you?
Much of their funds, maybe a majority, comes from luncheons where you
(could have) met Nora Lam and talked with her personally.

I am not familiar with problems cashing checks from ministries, generally I felt they were some sort of gesture not something to actually be cashed. I mean, if I’m about to send money to support a ministry and their cause am I going to cash a check from them? Apparently some people don’t have a problem with that?

  4. Some charities, of every ilk, must report contributions and contributors, not all. Those lists are compiled and sold. A person can cut down the chance of getting on junk mail lists by contributing anonymously whenever possible.

    • I must have really found a soft spot with this post. Let me be clear, I like Christens, the Bible has many good lessons to learn. I do not like scammers that use religion to scare people and take their money. There are many ways the Nora Lam charity could write their letter that doesn’t include people being fake tortured, and a check that will give them access to your bank account. Elderly people who hold their Christen values very close will read this letter and become fearful for Christens in China. But they have little money to give. Do they eat and buy medication? Or send money to Nora Lam? They see a check for $5. That is money they need to live. They cash the check. Nora Lam then takes $40 from them every month. That is a very bad thing to do to an elderly person with little money.

I gave links in the post to the original photos. 3 of them are from a Falun Gong protest. They are meant to shock and scare people into giving. It is not necessary to do this.

A good charity will spend less than 10% of their budget on fundraising. They spend 21% of their budget on mail like this. How many more bibles could they give out if they spent less on extravagant mail packages like this? They should spend more time talking to Chinese leaders and less time writing a multi-page letter with yellow highlighter.

I am not offended by him calling me a ding bat. It is not about the words, but the way he used them. He wanted to hurt me with them. It didn’t work.

Why should I have to hide when I give to a charity? How about they not sell out their donors.
