Drowning in Junk Mail – This week in Junk Mail 5 pieces

April Calendar

Welcome to April! Here is my little calendar with all the groups that should stop this month. Note that Conservative StrikeForce is on there.

All 5 pieces

I am really getting down to the nitty gritty. This week is filled will old friends.

All 5 pieces

Not the kind that you want to have a cup of coffee and a chat with. The kind you need to take out a restraining order on. If you read this blog every week you can’t help but to notice that I cut and paste a lot. It made sense when I was getting over 100 pieces a week. I was spending 20+ hours a week on this blog and I needed some short cuts just to make my self imposed weekly deadline of Tuesday or Wednesday. I haven’t looked up some groups since I did my initial research. For some of them it has almost been a year. That is a lifetime in the direct marketing world. So this week I re-looked up everyone. And I found some changes. They are all still scumbags, that didn’t change.

Western Center for Journalism

Western Center for Journalism. Wiki page. Source Watch page. Run by Floyd Brown Opt-out here and call (623) 217-7766 also opt-out from Response Unlimited

It is apart of Liftable Media Inc witch includes click bait mills liftable.com and thoughtfulwomen.orgBizapedia page, it is entirely run by Floyd Brown and his family. Patrick Brown has put up a slideshow made by Floyd on how to blog. I do everything he talks about, except the monetization.

Abraham Lincoln Foundation for Public Policy Research

Abraham Lincoln Foundation for Public Policy Research AKA Lincoln Institute for Research and Education, PO Box 254, Great Falls, Virginia 22066 Facebook page (no posts since 2011), Washington State page, Charity Navigator page (not rated), Guidestar page. Opt-out here contactus@lincolnreview.com (703) 759-4278. I got no response from either. Did you see that? I finally found a website for them. It has completely different contact information than the junk mail. The contact information listed in the mailpiece is novone@verizon,net and (703) 759-4599 that will get you nowhere.

Conservative StrikeForce

Conservative StrikeForceOpen Secrets page. From Fox Detroit:

“Since 2010, the Conservative Strikeforce has raised nearly $10 million. More than $9 million of the loot was paid to the fundraisers. That means candidates got less than 8 percent of the money donors sent in.”

Opt-out here info@conservativestrikeforce.com and call (888) 295-6480, mailbox was full. Also opt-out from ForthRight Strategy AKA Base Connect. That is right Base Connect changed their name last month. Kimberly Bellissimo and Scott B. MacKenzie have hung up a new shingle to run their fundraising scams. Was it because they are listed as a fundraiser for one of America’s Worst Charities? Or was it because if you use them as the fundraiser for your political campaign, you will no help from the Republican establishment? No, it was because CFO Michael Centanni was caught with child porn. He plead guilty. For those of you keeping track that is the third name for this firm since 2002. I have contacted Conservative StrikeForce and ForthRight Strategy AKA Base Connect already. Normally I would send a complaint to the DMA.

There were a couple of interesting things about this mailpiece. One was the amount of money it asked for: $2.16, $20.16, $200.16, $2106.00.

The other was the pretense of the mailpiece. It is to pick who your Republican Presidential Preference is. The list is: Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Donald Trump, Bobby Jindal, Jim Gilmore, Rick Perry, John Kasich, Lindsey Graham, Chris Christie, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina, Sarah Palin, George Pataki, Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, Marco Rubio, Undecided and Other. Over the past year I have gotten junk mail from no less than 7 of the people on this list.

American Seniors Against ObamaCare a program of Citizen Guardian

American Seniors Against Obama Care a program of Citizen Guardian, Inc. GuideStar page, Opt-out info@CitizenGuardian.org and call (202) 469-3433. They use Engage Direct Mail and InfoCision.  Mail from them should have stopped last month. Normally I would file a complaint with the DMA.

One part of the letter reads:

At a cost of about 45 cents for the printing and postage to get out petitions into the hands of just one person, I need to raise $450,00 within the next 30 days. And another $950,00 after to intensify the pressure right through June.

I need to stop mail from them before they “intensify the pressure right through June.”

Balboa Mailing Company scam

Balboa Mailing Company scam

Balboa Mailing Company George Taylor 510 W, Broadway STE 800 San Diego CA 92101. Opt-out info@moneymailerprogram.com no reply, or call (619) 760-0570 it is just a pre-recorded message about how great their program is. I have already sent in a form 1500 for these guys, but it won’t kick in until next month.

No pre-paid envelopes, and no form 1500‘s to send out.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This Week in Junk Mail 7 pieces

All 7 pieces
I am back from my trip to the desert. While I was out I got a great comment from Lorraine part of it read: “I wrote a letter directly to the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre and was told when I called 10 days later that she was off the list.” Good for you Lorraine.

While I was out only 7 pieces of mail showed up.  This month is the end for a whole bunch of groups.

America Grant Network
America Grant Network PO Box 3211 New York NY 10008. Run by Robert Newhart. Just send in $34.95 and he will tell you how to get free money from the government. This is one of the great canards of scam junk mail. They have an F from the BBB. Multiple Rip-off Reports. If you really need financial help from the government go to USA.gov and they can point you in the right direction. Or go to Unclaimed.org to find unclaimed money in closed bank accounts. Do not try to cash the check in the mailpiece. More than likely it won’t work, but in case it does, it will give Robert Newhart access to your bank account. If you want to stop this type of junk mail fill out a form 1500.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This week in Junk Mail 14 pieces

All 14 pieces of junk mail

This was a bad week, in terms of junk mail. I haven’t gotten this much mail in a week, since before the new year.

The lady who’s mail this is died last week. This completely changes the way I will handle mail from now on. No more form 1500’s (Unless they are going to step 2, because F those guys) No more complaints to the DMA. My mantra has changed from “Take me off your mailing list” to “Deceased she is dead”. I have already filled out the DMA’s Deceased Do Not Contact Registration form, acxiom’s opt-out page has a box you can check if you are opting-out a deceased person opt-out here, and I called Epsilon.com AKA Abacus (888) 780-3869 to tell them she has passed. All that will take 3 months to take effect. I went down to my local post office to find out how to permanently stop her mail. I will do that when her estate is settled. Don’t worry all of that will get it’s own blog post when I do the last step.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This Week in Junk Mail 10 pieces

All 10 pieces

While I was starting to write up this week’s junk mail I found out that the lady who’s mail this is, has passed away. Do not feel sad for her. She lived her life the way she wanted, to the fullest. I will process this week’s junk mail as I normally would. But next week will mark a new chapter in this blog and the way the junk mail is dealt with.

First we have a letter telling me that I have gotten her off another mailing list and the physical manifestation of why I needed to go to the lengths I did.

Freedom Watch
2 mailpieces from Freedom Watch and a letter from Larry Klayman Esq himself. It is telling me that in 60 days I will no longer get his junk mail.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This Week in Junk Mail, Week After New Year’s Day 9 pieces

All 9 pieces

Now that everyone is back at work, I can go back to hammering away at the junk mail. Only 9 pieces came this week but I will be emailing and calling people about the last 3 weeks of junk mail that came during the holidays. The bottom of this post has a lot going on.

Since a lot of new people are finding this blog I will restate my current technique and goal:

  1. Scan every mailpiece into PaperKarma
  2. Email and a phone call to every group
  3. Email and phone call to the direct marketing firm of each group (if I can find it)
  4. If no pick up on the phone call or no response to the email by the end of the week, fill out a complaint to the DMA
  5. If scam send in a form 1500

The ultimate goal is zero junk mail, but right now I am working toward 1 month with no junk mail with her name on it.

A note to all charities and political groups: If you do not answer your phone (no, I am not leaving a message) or send me a conformation that you got my email and that the name and address has been taken off your mailing list, you will get a DMA complaint. End of story. How hard is it to pick up the phone, or send a quick conformation email?

They bought their mailing list from Conrad Direct, I emailed them in June and October listinfo@conraddirect.com. I gave them a call (201) 567-3200. The month of December has been interesting so far. The political junk mail has almost disappeared and the charity junk mail has ramped up.

I also finished my junk mail Christmas tree in true Drowning in Junk Mail style.

I hope all of you enjoyed my 2 part Big Data extravaganza part 1, part 2. Let’s get back to the everyday nightmare of stopping junk mail. Only 14 pieces this week.

The letters I sent to the DMA are coming back:
Letters from the DMA to Carl Olson and Jerome Corsi

This one is to Carl Olson and Jerome Corsi of State Department Watch

This letter is concerning a complaint that the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has received regarding mail pieces being sent from your organization to the above-named consumer. In our ongoing effort to build trust and be responsive to the consumers of the direct marketing industry, we are forwarding this complaint to you for your response.

Ms. [name] [relationship], Jennifer Bell, has tried repeatedly to remove her elderly [relationship] name and address from your organization’s mailing lists but has not been successful in having her requests honored. Please see enclosed correspondence. Ms. Bell has asked us to contact your organization to request that you remove her [relationship] name and address from your in-house mailing. Prospect and share lists.

The Direct Marketing Association encourages all marketers to adhere to its self-regulatory Guidelines for Ethical Business Practice and its Commitment to Consumer Choice (CCC) program http://www.dmaresponsibility.org/ and Compliance Center http://thedma.org/compliance/. This includes promptly honoring individual opt-out requests, whether the individual is a customer or prospective customer. Our guidelines require that you keep a list of consumers who have asked not to hear from you and remove them from lists you mail to, share or rent.

We ask your cooperation in complying with the consumer’s request in a timely manner. We would appreciate it if you respond directly to Ms. Bell and provide us with a copy of your response.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.

In this case I will give State Department Watch until Christmas week. Anything after that and I will tell Lisa on them.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This week in Junk Mail 31 pieces

All 32 pieces

I’m not gonna lie the mail can get boring. They send the same mailpiece over and over. They do that because once they find a mailpiece that brings in money they will send it out forever until it stops being effective. It is rare that junk mail has a topical, ripped-from-the-headlines subject.

Freedom Watch

This week Larry Klayman’s Freedom Watch sent a mailpiece that talks about ISIS. Of course it is trying to scare the money out of you, with the envelope screaming:

ISIS terror cells now on American soil… protect your family: open now!

Thanks Larry, I will just go crawl under my bed now.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This Week in Junk Mail 48 pieces

All 45 pieces

I have stalled. I am stuck at 40-50 pieces a week. I don’t expect to drop again until the end of the month when the junk mail from Base Connect stops. I am taking a photo of every mailpiece in PaperKarma. I have entered over 140 different companies since I stated using PaperKarma in late July. A human from the DMA got back to me. They want people to mail in a formal complaint. I am going to try and get an e-mail address out of them.
