Drowning in Junk Mail – This week in Junk Mail, 87 pieces

Another great week with less than 100 pieces of junk mail. For those of you that haven’t been following along from the start, the peak week was 154 pieces of junk mail. I will take 87 pieces any week, after being deluged with 154 pieces of mail screaming to be opened.

2 in 1 day club
The 2 in 1 day club was big this week. It includes:

Tea Parties junk mail
3 Tea Party letters. 2 from Steve Eichler’s Tea Party. Opt out here contact@TeaParty.org.  And one from Tea Party PatriotsWiki page Opt out here.

DNC & RNC junk mail
2 from the DNC and the RNC each. and 2 from the NRSC. None of them can figure out why she hasn’t sent in her yearly dues yet.

3 from National Committee to Preserve Social Security and MedicareWiki page, Open Secrets page. When did 3 return envelopes become a thing? This is the second one in 2 weeks. Make sure you opt out twice:  Do not rent my nameNo More Mail.

Junk Mail made by Response Unlimited
These 6 are all from the same direct marketing firm: Response Unlimited. I will be devoting an entire post to that company and their clients. But for now opt out here.

The best mash up of junk mail lists this week is:

SPLC and friends
Getting a letter from the Southern Poverty Law Center,  in the same week as Traditional Values Coalition, SPLC page, and the Citizens Assembly’s Safe Borders Coalition. Don’t have a website but they are closely aligned with the Minuteman people. They aren’t on the SPLC radar yet, but they fall in to the anti-Immigrant category.

US scams
10 US based scams. Almost everyone is going down this week.

  • American Sweepstakes Publishers PO Box 12954 Kansas City, KS 66112-2954 it is on it’s last legs. I sent a  form 1500 for them a few weeks ago.
  • L.D.R. PO Box 190 Old Westbury, NY 15568 is playing games with me. I have already sent out a form 1500 on the outside return address under a different name: L.D.R. PO Box 422 Old Bethpage, NY 11804. It’s OK guys I will keep sending them in until you stop.
  • The Douglass Report 189 N. Charles St. Baltimore MD 21201. Rational Wiki page.
  • Scoopified P.O. Box 277; Bellingham, WA 98227.  It is written by the mysterious Diane Morgan.

2 with the same PO Box
Dr. David William’s Alternatives, PO Box 95 Old Shoals rd Arden, NC 28704. He is a chiropractor who is into peddling various pills to older people. Here is nice write-up by a doctor about a patient binging in one of his magazines. I put in a request to stop the mail through Catalog Choice months ago and it didn’t, so a form 1500 it is.

3 with the same PO Box
Dr. Frank Shallenberger’s Real Cures, Advanced Bionutritionals, and Dr. Nan Kathryn Fuchs’s Women’s Health Letter have the same PO Box. PO Box 8051 Norcross, GA 30091-851. Again I put in a request to stop the mail through Catalog Choice months ago and it didn’t work. Because they all use the same address, I only have to send in 1 form 1500. Thanks guys 🙂

Left overs
Here are the leftovers.

Pocket calendar and a dollar
This week I made a dollar and a pocket calendar.

Marked calandar
Luckily it is a 15 month calendar. I have already put it to good use. I estimate that the junk mail from Response Unlimited should stop the first week of August.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This Week in Junk Mail, 61 pieces

61 pieces woo hoo! A sub 100 piece week! I hope this is the new normal.

I had a bit of a set back. I sent in a form 1500 for GI America and it bounced back.
GI America bounce back
It was bounced back because they aren’t selling anything in the mail piece. I disagree, they are asking for money, but I am not here the reinvent the form 1500 wheel, so I will just send an email to the Tea Party group that runs GI America, contact@TeaParty.org

The worst packaging of the week goes to Mike Huckabee and Secure America Now for their bubble pack containing  2 sheets of paper and an envelope.
Mike Huckabee junk mail
The letter reads “I sent you this letter in this special Jiffy Pack carrier because I knew you would not want to miss it.” Congratulations guys, you have my attention and for the first time I am going to lookup Secure America Now. It was founded by pollsters John McLaughlin and Pat Caddell, Right Web page.

United States Justice Foundation
2 from United States Justice FoundationCharity Navigator page 2 stars. Source Watch page. It is made by Response Unlimited. One of them had a dollar in it 🙂

Liberty Grard
Liberty Guard these guys are new. They may have sent stuff in the past but it was just a normal letter and I didn’t notice it. Now they have sent 2 giant surveys to fill out. Bob Barr is the chairman. Find the Best page, Charity Navigator. Opt out here also opt-out of American Target Advertising

The mail from Liberty Guard looks like the mail from these 2 groups
Christian Seniors Association and Veterans in Defense of Liberty
Christian Seniors Association, a project of Traditional Values CoalitionWiki page, Open Secrets page, Rational Wiki page. And Veterans in Defense of Liberty. Charity Navigator page.

National Republican Senatorial Committee and National Republican Congressional Committee
2 from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (Wiki page, Source Watch page, Open Secrets page) not to be confused with the National Republican Congressional Committee (Wiki page, Source Watch page, Open Secrets page). The lady who’s mail this is got a gold membership card for the National Republican Senatorial Committee because she was in the top 1% of donors last year.

Southeastern Legal Foundation
Only 2 from Southeastern Legal FoundationWiki page, Charity Navigator page, Source Watch page. Opt out here jayers@southeasternlegal.org

Citizens United junk mail
4 from Citizens United. Wiki page, Open Secrets page, Source Watch page. I am at my wits end with these people. I sent a form 1500 on these guys and it bounced back because they aren’t selling anything in the mail piece. I am going to email them again. I am reluctant to call them, because I am afraid that I will let loose a string of profanity that will singe the person on the other end of the phone. I need these people to do what I want, and screaming F-bombs at them won’t solve anything.

5 in the Giant envelope division
Large envelopes

Including 2 calendars this week. That is 3 so far.
3 Calendars

11 charities

International scams
Only 3 international scams.

Marie de Fortune
Including Marie de Fortune and her hypno paper.

10 US based scams. Since the Post office wants scams where they sell things I will concentrate on the medical quackery ads this week  when I send out the form 1500’s.

All 61 pieces
Here are all 61 pieces of junk mail I got this week

Stuffed and ready to go
Here are all the prepaid envelopes all stuffed and ready to go

Form 1500's ready to go
5 form 1500’s ready to go. I was able to use some of the free stamps I have gotten in other junk mail on the large envelope.

And here are the leftovers.

I am crossing my fingers for another sub 100 pieces of junk mail week, next week.

Drowning in Junk Mail – Conservative Think Tanks and Vegan Physicians

Now that the junk mail is slowing down, I can see the smaller groups that are sending stuff. I am going to try to do more of these quick 3 item posts.

National Republican Senatorial Committee Gold Card
Her Gold Membership Card for National Republican Senatorial Committee has come in. The letter claims that she was in the top 1% of all their supporters. I hope this isn’t true. I hope they give this to all of the people who send them money. If it is true then they would be one of the biggest reasons that she lost her home, is on Medicare, and is in an assisted living facility.
Wiki page. Open Secrets page. Source Watch page. Tampa Bay Time’s Politi Fact page.
Opt-out here.

The Heritage Foundation
This rainbow assortment of envelopes is brought to you by The Heritage Foundation. They want a total of $75 over 100 days. Each envelope should have a $25 donation in it. I don’t know about you but I would have trouble remembering to send these out on time without a note on a calendar or a reminder on my phone. How is a 85 year old with a house full of junk mail going to send these out on the correct dates?
Wiki page. Source Watch page. Open Secrets page.
Opt out here: info@heritage.org

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine
That adorable little kitten is from Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. This letter is about stopping medical research on animals. This group is backed by PETA. They have the same views on animals as PETA with the veneer of being doctors.
Wiki page. Charity Navigator page, 3 stars but they spend 23% of their budget on fund raising. I think this entry by Cracked sums it up best.
Opt-out here: pcrm@pcrm.org

Drowning in Junk Mail – United States Justice Foundation and Christians in Defense of Israel

United States Justice Foundation
I normally would wait until the end of the week to profile this group. But they marked it “Urgent” and sent me 2 on the same day, so I felt compelled to show this direct mail from United States Justice Foundation. Charity Navigator page 2 stars. Source Watch page. Opt out here.

United States Justice Foundation
They also slipped me a dollar. Note to direct mail marketers: If you want me to profile you, sending me money never hurts.

The letter from the mailer with the dollar is the more interesting of the 2
United States Justice Foundation

“The enclosed $1 is real and you may keep it if you like. But I hope that you will choose not to do that. Instead, I hope that you will rush this $1 bill back to me TODAY…
… along with a special donation of your own to the United States Justice Foundation (USJF) in the amount of $300, $600, $900, or more.”

Wow really you are going to start at $300? No that can’t be right. Let’s look at the last page where you check off the dollar amount
United States Justice Foundation
These people aren’t playing. It is a $300 minimum. While I have been digging around I have found separate “elite” mailing lists for people who send the most money. I guess when the base donation is going to be $300 tossing a dollar in the envelope doesn’t add much it the over all cost of the mail campaign. The return envelope also has postage on it. They really want my $300.

The other letter was for the poors who can only afford to send $25
United States Justice Foundation

This mail is from Response Unlimited opt out here.

The other letter that caught my eye is about current events in Russia

Kiev Ablaze!!! Christians in Defense of Israel
Kiev Ablaze!!! The Bear is Back!!!

It is rare for me to get topical junk mail. It is mostly about Social Security, and impeaching Obama. This is about Putin and the Ukraine.

Kiev Ablaze!!! Christians in Defense of Israel
The strange part is that this is from Christians in Defense of Israel a project of World Prophetic Ministry. What Christians and Israel have to with Putin and the Ukraine is beyond me. I tried to read the letter but it gave me a headache. Dr. Ed Hindson also has a  Prophecy and Terrorism blog.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This week in Junk Mail, 104 pieces

I am going to get real this week. So far I have only sent form 1500’s to scammers. This week I will send out a form 1500 for Citizens United.

Citizens United form 1500

I have contacted them, HSP Direct the people who make their mailers, and NOVA List the people in charge of their mailing lists, multiple times and in multiple ways. None of them have gotten back to me.

Mike Huckabee, Citizens United
This week I got 5 pieces of mail form various branches of Citizens United. I am over it. When the form 1500 gets processed, all mail from Citizens United will stop. All mail from HSP Direct will stop. I am hoping that I will also be erased from NOVA List as well.

Update: It didn’t work because they aren’t selling anything in the mail piece. I may have to escalate form email to phone calls.

Update 2: When they didn’t get back to me I should have sent in a complaint to the DMA.

Oh heck no! I thought I got rid of you. Policy Issues Institute junk mail is back from the dead.

Moooneeeyyy, we want your mmoooneeyyy

Moooneeeyyy, we want your mmoooneeyyy

Don’t keep sending me stuff I will just do more research:
“By sending campaign brochures through the Policy Issues Institute in Irvine, political consultants save 15% to 20% on mailing costs because of discounts the U.S. Postal Service gives to nonprofits, according to a solicitation sent out by the institute’s paid marketer and political mail guru Bill Butcher. Financial records released by the institute show that those savings were significant enough that consultants paid $2.3 million to the institute for such purposes during last year’s elections.”

Keep this in mind for later in the post. I will let you figure out who is using this “one weird trick” to save on postage.

Dueling  Tea Party groups

Tea Party
On the right we have Steve Eichler’s Tea Party. He used to be in charge of the Minuteman Project with Jim Gilchrist. Opt out here contact@TeaParty.org
On the left is the Tea Party Express. Wiki page, It is a project of Our Country Deserves Better PACWiki page Open Secrets page. Opt out here.

And don’t confuse those 2 groups with the Tea Party Patriots.
Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund
They are completely different. Wiki page Opt out here.

G.I. America
4 from G.I. America / To Keep and Bear Arms again. I sent out a form 1500 last week because of the amount of mailings, and lack of info about the group. But since they sent me 4 more, I will do more digging. Bizapedia page. The main contact is Steve Eichler from the Tea Party.org  group above. Major Joe Gilbert and Bob Russell are just a couple of tea baggers following Steve around. This is fine, it means the Tea Party.org mail will stop also. Guys, some advise: If I am getting 3 of your mailers in 1 day, you are sending too many, too often. And get a website. I recommend WordPress. They are free, and you can customize them easily. But I am biased.

Stop Hilary Now, Dick Morris

Dick Morris‘s Stop Hillary Now. I get one or the other of these every week. This is the first time I have gotten them together. I think the group’s main purpose is to find the worst photos of Hillary Clinton possible. Opt out here comment@stophillarypac.org

The Democratic National Committee want her to renew her membership. They brought out the big guns, Joe Biden wrote one of them. Opt out here.

The Republican National Committee also wants her to renew her membership.  National Republican Senatorial Committee has a straw poll to fill out. But they don’t include return postage on the envelope. BOOOO! Wiki page.

Southeastern Legal Foundation
3 from Southeastern Legal Foundation. Wiki page, Charity Navigator page, Source Watch page. Opt out here jayers@southeasternlegal.org

Christian Seniors Association, a project of Traditional Values Coalition
3 from Christian Seniors Association, a project of Traditional Values Coalition. Wiki page, Open Secrets page, Rational Wiki page. Stay with me people, the family tree curls upon itself with this one. Reverend Louis P. Sheldon founded Traditional Values Coalition. His daughter Andrea Sheldon Lafferty and her husband run Christian Seniors Association. They are on the radar of the Southern Poverty Law Center for hate speech. I have joked in the past about people being proud of being called a hate group by the SPLC, well Andrea Sheldon Lafferty really is.

Ted Cruz
4 from Ted Cruz. 1 from Ted Cruz Victory Committee (Find the Best page). I like the simplicity of the site. No pretense, just give me money. It is a joint fundraising committee authorized by and composed of Ted Cruz for Senate (Open Secrets page) and the Jobs Growth and Freedom Fund (Open Secrets page). Citizens Against Government Waste is getting more thirsty, 3 this week. Wiki page, Charity Navigator page, Source Watch page, Open Secrets page.

Large Envelopes
But really, it was the week of the giant envelope. Hay! I know how to stand out in the crowd! A huge envelope. They can’t miss it! Um yah about that. You don’t stand out if I get 8 of them.

19 charities this week. Mixed in there somewhere is one of the oldest  environmental organizations in California, Save the Redwoods League. Founded in 1918 they are the OG tree huggers. Wiki page, Charity Navigator page.

I also want to pull out yet another save the horses group:
Front Range Equine Rescue
This one is Front Range Equine Rescue. They want to something something BLM something wild horses something. Charity Navigator page 4 stars blah blah they are great, whatever. Look at the format of the mailer. Does it look familiar? Kinda like the mail from Ben Carson and the Flying Tigers?
Ben Carson and Flying Tigers junk mail
This is made by Eberle AssociatesOpt out here.

International Scams
Only 4 international scams. I am sure this is an aberration. Just wait, next week there will be 40 scams from the Netherlands alone.

U.S. Scams
13 U.S. based scams. Most of these are the last gasps of breath before the form 1500 kicks in.

Case in point Prize Portfolio has sent all of these after I sent in a form 1500
Prize Portfolio junk mail
If anyone is going to send something after the cut off, I predict it will be these people.

Box o junk mail 104
Here they are all 104 pieces. Do you like the new look for my junk mail box? I have decided to sell out, and monetize my blog. Ben Carson is my first sponsor. Just kidding, John Phillips Souza IV has sent me a stack of stickers and I thought the front flap of the box needed spicing up.

Stuffed and ready to go
15 pre-paid postage envelopes stuffed and ready to be dropped off at the post office

I am only sending 3  form 1500’s  this week.

One to Citizens United
Citizens United form 1500

Update: It didn’t work because they aren’t selling anything in the mail piece.

And one to Kingsley, Harper & Hatfield PMB 395, 176-25 Union Turnpike Fresh Meadows NY, 11366. I know, I know it was very hard to turn down the 3,900,000.00. But that is a chance I am going to take.
Kingsley, Harper & Hatfield form 1500
And one other that wan’t nearly as pretty but just as annoying.
Form 1500's filled out and ready to go

I am hoping for a sub 100 pieces of junk mail week. This week is also the cut-off for a big batch of form 1500’s. Please be as lazy and scummy as I think you are scammers. I so want  to do step 2 with someone.

Drowning in Junk Mail – This Week in Junk Mail, 136 Pieces

I am back up to “normal” levels of junk mail. After a nice 2 week break with only one day of junk mail all my friends are back again. Missing are the SuperPACs that I directly contacted, and got back to me. I shutter at the thought of how much I would have gotten this week if The National Center for Public Policy Research, Federation Of Responsible Citizens, and Policy Issues Institute were still in the mix.

One bit of good news is, that this:
14 form 1500's going to the Pricing Classification Service Center

Turned into this:
Form 1500 recipts
That is 15 less pieces of junk mail I will be getting in 30 days 🙂

60 Plus junk mail
2 from everyone’s favorite wanna be AARP, but is a puppet for the Koch brothers: 60+. Wiki page, Source Watch page, Open Secrets page

Oh look they have a Flickr account:
Here is where we are sending the next batch of junk mail.

Sign up to win a Kindle Fire, and get put on our junk mail list.

Could you please send us more money? No, I don’t care that you ate cat food this week.
Opt out here info@60plus.org

The Senior Citizens League
2 from The Senior Citizens League, an affiliate of The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) Wiki page, Open Secrets page. They have a Memorial Foundation, Charity Navigator gives it 0 stars.
Opt out here

United States Justice Foundation
2 from United States Justice Foundation (USJF). Source Watch page,  Charity Navigator gives them 1 star. Gary Kreep and the USJF are mentioned by the Southern Poverty Law Center as being anti-Muslim among other things. This mail is made by Response Unlimited.

Ted Cruz junk mail
2 from Ted Cruz. One from his “Draft Ted” group the other from Citizens Against Government Waste. Opt out here membermgr@cagw.org.  The last time we saw them they were using John MacCain as their poster guy.

Judicial Watch
2 from Judicial Watch. Wiki page, Source Watch page,  Charity Navigator page, 2 stars and 33% spent on fundraising.
Opt out here info@judicialwatch.org.

Mountain States Legal Foundation
2 from Mountain States Legal Foundation,  Wiki page, Charity Navigator page, Source Watch page, Exxon Secrets page.  Somehow Ed Meese is involved. And they sent me dirt. It is supposed to be from someone’s ranch. I bet that if I was to go all CSI on it, It would be from some local quarry in Lakewood, Colorado.

Southeastern Legal Foundation junk mail
3 from Southeastern Legal FoundationEd Meese is involved with this one also. Wiki page, Source Watch page, Charity Navigator page.

Mike Huckabee Junk Mail
3 from Mike Huckabee. I have contacted his main website and have gotten no response back.

G.I. America
4 from G.I. America. G.I. America’s website is not working. I checked the Internet Archive and they hadn’t posted anything since 2010. To Keep and Bear Arms never had a website as far as I can tell. We have a Zombie PAC people. The only way to stop them is a USPS form 1500 to the head.

Update: It didn’t work because they aren’t selling anything in the mail piece. It is OK I have figured out that these 2 groups are run by Tea Party.org. Opt out here: contact@TeaParty.org

Citizens United junk mail
5 from Citizens United, Mr. Huckabee is in this pile also. Check out the 10 return stamps that one letter came with. They put boxes on the envelope and everything.
I have emailed them at info@citizensunited.org. No response. I found the company who makes their mail, HSP Direct and emailed them at info@hspdirect.com.  No response. I found HSP’s mailing list manager NOVA list. I contacted them here. No Response yet. If they don’t get back to me this week, I am going to file a complaint with the DMA at ethics@the-dma.org.

But the winner this week goes to the laziest junk mail I have ever seen:
Ghetto junk mail
From Disabled Police Officers of America and The Citizen Guardian It is a letter wrapped around an envelope. These 2 groups need your money just so they can pay for a better mailer. This is so pathetic. I would love to see the stats on how much this mailer brings in for these 2. My guess?

I warned you Ben Carson, that if you kept sending me stuff it was going to get real:
Ben Carson and Flying Tigers junk mail
There you go, Stars and Stripes Forever is CRAP!
Check out how the completely unrelated Flying Tiger Historical Organization mail is the exact same format.
Alex Altman over at Time Magazine has been following the money trail of Ben Carson.  In that article he mentions “direct-mail wizard Bruce Eberle” and Eberle Associates. Opt out here.

Charity junk mail
20 charities this week. Including a 2015 calendar, more return address labels and not 1 but 2 handy cancer ribbon decoder charts
National Foundation for Cancer Research
Cancer Awareness Ribbon Color chart
Thanks National Foundation for Cancer Research now I know that testicular cancer is orchid, not purple. That is for pancreatic cancer. Charity Navigator page, 2 stars, 46% spent on fund raising .

International scams
18 international scams. I still don’t know what to do with them. I will stop you, PO Box 1191 Maarssen if it is the last thing I ever do.

Us based scams
20 US based scams. I have gotten most of these before. They will be getting a form 1500.

Post card scams
It was a big week for postcards, 8 in all. This is frustrating, I need a return address to give to fill out a form 1500 but all they give me is a phone number. Jerk scammers.

The Society and The League
The Society and The League. I have gotten one of these before, but to get both on the same day is very special. I don’t want to drag you down the rabbit hole to far with this, but it a cult. It is as one ex-member put it “a combination of Scientology and Ayn Rand”. Neo-Tech was created in 1984 by Frank R. Wallace and is now run by his son. They promise you the secret to great wealth. But you end up buying and selling really expensive books, that cost well over $100. Like I said this is the second one, time for a form 1500.

psychic junk mail
Lots of psychic junk mail this week, 4 total. I can’t do anything about Mr Hypno Eyes Morgan T. because he comes out of Switzerland. But Grandma Rosa, Maria Duval at the Destiny Research Center (an entire blog devoted to Maria), and Numerological Resource Center are all getting a form 1500.

Morgan T. junk mail
Give me your money. All of your money.

Box o junk mail 136
Here is all 136 pieces with  St. Rand Paul the patron saint of junk mail, and our Lady of Blessed Contribution Dr. Annette Bosworth.

Left overs
and here are the leftovers

26 pre paid envelops stuffed and ready to go
26 pre-paid envelops stuffed and ready to be sent out

15 USPS from 1500's
15 scams with a form 1500 attached ready to go to New York.

This week was great for the mail paying me to stop it
This weeks bounty
I made $1.25 in cash, $1.36 in stamps, 2 baggies of dirt and 1 talisman.

I am going to ratchet up my technique this week. I started this project in late March/early April, and I see no difference in the amount, or senders of junk mail. I am going to contact the DMA complaint email ethics@the-dma.org and ask for help.

Update: How to fill out a DMA ethics complaint form

Drowning in Junk Mail – How to Stop Scam Junk Mail Using a Prohibitory Order

If you have gotten any of the letters in this post TOSS THEM IN THE GARBAGE!! They will bring nothing but heartache and an empty wallet. If you get a lot of this type of mail I am going to show you how to stop it.

Scams from St. Louis MO

Everyone of these letters is called a 419 scam. It is named after the law code in Nigeria where the scam is prevalent. It is also called advanced fee fraud. The scam is they promise you something (money, a mystery box, I have an example with a car) But in order for you to get the whatever it is you must give them some money first. It usually hovers around $20. It is a lie, you won’t be getting whatever it is they have promised you. This mail will be the most beautiful, look the most official, and scream OPEN ME!

American Fiduciary Disbursements, Bellevill, NJ

DON’T! If you give money to one of them in hopes of getting the prize, you will be put on a mailing list of the worst kind, and you will get a blizzard of scam junk mail.

30 junk mail scams

Every week I receive about 30 scam letters. Well not me, my family has redirected a relative’s mail to me. She has dementia and can no longer care for herself. While going through her papers we found that about 3 years ago she started sending money to these people. She would very carefully photocopy the letter, send it off with a check, and then file the photocopy away, all in hopes of getting the prize. Now I get 30 scam letters a week, and her phone gets upwards of 20 calls a day from Jamaica and other far off lands, all asking for money.

American Claims & Reporting Center (ARC) Daniel P. Kennedy

Let’s tune into a special report from KTVN channel 2 Reno/Tahoe. See the National Consumers League doesn’t want you to send them in either. The only problem with that report is that they don’t tell you how to make the scam mail go away. Today I am going to teach you how.

First sign up for DMA Choice (If you want to do more you can Opt-out of Big Data). Then wait, the junk mail should stop in about 90 days (It didn’t for me, but that is why I am writing a blog isn’t it). If you are still getting scam junk mail after that, it is time to bring out the big guns: USPS From 1500. It’s original purpose was to stop pornography, but now it can be used to stop any mail  that is selling something. Good thing that asking for $20 to get $10 million is considered selling something. It only works on mail based in the USA. Scammers share their “suckers list” often. Word will spread across the pond quickly enough. It does not work on 501c(3) charities or 501c(4) PACs unless they are selling something, just asking for a donation or giving away free tote bags don’t count. But having a sweepstakes does.

Project suplies
For this project you will need: A pen, a stapler, envelopes, stamps, cheap copy paper, a printer, and scam junk mail. Optional: The free return address labels that came in other junk mail, and Avery address labels.

I would also recommend picking the smallest mailpiece a scammer sends to you, it will cost the least postage. But if they only send a full sized newspapers as ads, break out a giant manila envelope and send away.

Prohibitory Order From 1500
Next download USPS form 1500 (PDF) also called a  Prohibitory Order. This is an excellent walk through of the process from Knowmore.org (the web site seems to be down, so I am linking to the Wayback Machine version)

I bought the cheapest copy paper I could find, and set my printer to the lightest setting. I didn’t want to waste good paper and toner on these scammers. I have highlighted all the boxes you need to fill in.

From 1500
The form is overly complicated. Mostly because we aren’t using it the way it was originally intended to be used. Just remember to initial box 1 and 1a and you are golden.

Staple it all togeather
After you fill out the form, staple the entire contents of the letter to the form. This includes the outer envelope.

Stuff to stick to the envelope
This is where all that other junk mail comes in handy. It seems like every other charity has sent me return address labels. This sheet is from the National Park Foundation. It had about 40 labels. For most people that should be enough for a year. For me? 2 weeks. Good thing other charities sent me more.

Putting a form 1500 into an envelope
Slap the return address label, the Avery label and a stamp on the envelope. Then fold the stapled junk mail into the envelope.

14 form 1500's going to the Pricing Classification Service Center
Sent it off to Pricing and Classification Service Center PO Box 1500 New York, NY 10008-1500.

Form 1500 recipts
You should get a reply back in 2 weeks. I am probably the only person who has ever sent over 70 of these out.

Form 1500 recipts
If you fill it out right, you will get a conformation letter that they have stopped the mail from coming to your house. The Prohibitory Order will last 5 years, and will take effect 30 days after the scammer gets the order from the post office.

With this batch I also got the letter that goes to the scammer. They are ordered to:
1. To refrain from any mailing to the addressee, effective on the 30th calendar day after the receipt of this order.
2. To delete immediately the addressee from all mailing lists controlled by you or your agents or assigns.
3. To abstain immediately from the sale, rental, exchange, or other transaction mailing lists bearing the name of the addressee.

Form 1500 bounce back
If you fill it wrong, you will get the entire letter back, and a copy of form 1500 highlighted with the pink highlighter of doom. It is OK, just fill it out again (check your work this time) and send it back.
One week I messed up an entire batch and they all came back 😦 But the next day free stamps came with the junk mail. I love when the junk mail pays me to stop it. 🙂

The next step is, if they send another piece of junk mail I am supposed to write “I received this mailpiece on (date)” with a copy of the Prohibitory Order and the order number and sent it to the New York office. It hasn’t gotten to that point yet. It will be fun when it does.

Update: Going to Step 2

Alternatives going to step 2
It had to happen, after sending out over 70 form 1500’s someone had to slip-up and ignore me. On the Prohibitory Order is the date they sent it to you. The scammer has 30 days from that date to stop sending you mail. On the 31st day you can go to step 2.

This is what it looks like when you go to Step 2. I wrote “I received this on (date)” and signed it, on the on the outside of the mailpiece and again on the return envelope. I photocopied the letters that the postoffice sent to me, put it all into an envelope and sent it off.

This is what I got back a couple of weeks later:

Form 1500 Step 2

This letter is for me:

Based on the evidence you furnished us regarding a possible violation of Prohibitory Order 2080212, we have issued a Complaint (PS form 2153) against the mailer involed. A copy of the Complaint is enclosed for your records.

It has been our experiance that most mailers abide by the provisions of a Prohibitory Order issued against them under 39 USC 3008. However, in some cases, additional steps are necessary. Issuing a Complaint is the first step in the process designed to end violation of a Prohibitory Order.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

This letter is for the scammer:
