My New Year’s Resolution this year is to stop junk mail, and it should be your’s too

No Junk Mail

This past year I have taught myself how to stop junk mail. I want to pass what I have learned on to you. No matter the level of junk mail you have, if you no longer want to receive it, I am here to help you stop it. If you are a long time reader of this blog this will be repetitive for you, but this is a good post to share with friends and family who also want to stop their junk mail problems.

There are lots of reasons why you should stop unwanted direct mail:

  • The Environment: It takes a lot of trees, and water to make all those pretty ads, and then all that junk mail just goes into a landfill.
  • Your Time: Even if it a few minutes a day, sorting and reading mail takes up your precious time.
  • Your Money: The more junk mail you get the higher the chance you have to donate to a bad charity, be taken in a scam, or have identity theft happen to you.

If you only do one thing this year to lesson your junk mail, sign up for DMAChoice. It won’t stop everything but it will put a nice dent into the junk mail you receive.

You can also sign up for directmail.com‘s National Do Not Mail List. It is independent from DMAChoice.

If you get a lot of credit card offers you can use OptOutPrescreen or call 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688) to stop them.

Red Plum, Penny Saver, and Valpak, The Unholy 3
Stop the most annoying everyday junk mail you receive:  Valpack couponsRed Plum ads, and PennySaver.

While you are waiting to be dropped from everyone’s mailing lists, enter every mailpiece you get into PaperKarma. If you don’t have a smart phone you can use Catalog Choice. I have found PaperKarma to be more effective than Catalog Choice.

Go one step further and opt-out out of data brokers and other data mining sites. If they can’t see you, they can’t send you stuff.

There is a lot more you can do. But this is a list of things you can do in a day. It will take about 3 months for you to see the full effects of your efforts.
